Student Voice Scholarship

Two awards in the amount of $4,000 each will be awarded THIS YEAR!  This scholarship IS NOT LIMITED to just seniors - any student is eligible to enter if they meet the criteria.  The major requirement is that students who apply must be a member of a club (Not sure what clubs are out there? Check the school website!).  Applications are available from Ms. Morrison Rm. 892.  Please contact Ms. Morrison for additional information!

Children of UPS Workers/Retirees Scholarship - Due April 15th!

The CHILDREN of United Parcel Service employees or retirees who live in Florida are eligible for scholarship funds to attend college or vocational school in Florida. 

Applicants must:

• be high school graduates 
• demonstrate financial need
• be children of UPS worker(s) or retiree(s) who live in Florida

Awards, which are for undergraduate study only, range from $1,000 to $10,000 per year.  

Community college students and vocational school students may receive a maximum of $5,000 per year.  

Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study on the basis of satisfactory academic performance.  

The deadline for application is April 15th.

Raymond A. Vinson Scholarship - Due March 1

Community First awards scholarships annually to five college freshmen up to $4,000 ($1,000 annually per student, renewable for four years).
Eligible applicants will:

• Be a member or dependent of a member of Community First Credit Union with an account in good standing for at least one year.
• Be high school senior/entering freshman college student and under the age of 24 at the application deadline.
• Demonstrate leadership ability and financial need.
• Attend a two-or four-year public or private accredited Florida college or university.
• Have a high school grade point average of at least 3.0 (unweighted) plus a minimum ACT score of 24 or SAT score of 1,110. 
• Fill out and return the scholarship application and supporting documents by March 1.
• Recipient may continue the scholarship on an annual basis until graduation, not to exceed four years. A GPA of at least 2.5 the freshman year and 3.0 each succeeding year are required for continued eligibility.

James Weldon Johnson also offers ACT prep for both current high school students and students who graduated with a Certificate of Completion. 

First session began on January 14th and goes until February 6th.  

Second session will begin on February 25th and goes until April 10th. 

 ACT prep sessions are timed to lead right up to a Saturday testing of the ACT.  The class is free of charge and meets at James Weldon Johnson ACT Center #3054, 1840 West 9th Street, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. For more information about the Test Prep program at James Weldon, please contact Dr. Larsen (larsenk1@duvalschools.org).

2014 Black History Month Contests - Due Jan. 31

Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott invite K-12 students to participate in the 2014 Black History Month art and essay contests. The student contests focus on the theme “Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream: 50 Years in Action.” Students are asked to respond to how they are influenced and inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Information about the contests and Florida’s Black History Month is available on Florida’s Black History Month website at www.FloridaBlackHistory.com. 
Winners will receive a four-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation. 
Art Contest for Grades K-3 – The Black History Month art contest is open to all Florida students in grades K-3, and two winners will be selected. 

Essay Contest for Grades 4-12 – The Black History Month essay contest is open to all Florida students in grades 4 through 12. Three winners will be selected: one elementary student (grades 4-5), one middle-school student (grades 6-8), and one high school student (grades 9-12).

eSchoolView Scholarship – Due Feb. 1, 2014

Eight scholarships, totaling $15,000 are up for grabs this year as part of Investing in Our Future. The following awards will be offered in the Web Design and Development contest that is open to high school seniors across the country.
One - $5,000
Two - $2,500
Three - $1,000

Students entering this contest are required to develop a homepage and one interior page for an educational website that does not yet exist on the web. The site does not have to be live, but those that are will be awarded additional points towards final score. These pages must be submitted as an image file (ex. jpeg, pdf, tif.) The site should be related to a school class or club and should reflect a collaborative effort between a “pseudo client” and the student as the designer. The client can be a number of different people, including a teacher, an administrator, or a professional in the field. The student should also include a log of meetings with their client as well as a budget to follow—this should include a simple breakdown of the design, development, hosting and maintenance costs for their site.  

A written essay or video is required to describe the process students used to collaborate with their client to ensure their design and/or website met their client’s needs, why they chose this contest, why they deserve the scholarship and how they went above and beyond the requirements. They should also include their future education plans and any other relevant information. A letter of recommendation shall accompany the submission. 

Gates Millennium Scholars - DEADLINE is here!

ATTENTION: Do not wait until the last minute to submit your application for the Gates Millennium Scholars Program! The deadline is quickly approaching. Students are only eligible to be considered if all three forms (the student application, the Nominator Form and the Recommender Form) are submitted by Wednesday, 1/15/2014 11:59:00 PM EST. 

Note: In the past, the website has experienced a huge slow down in the submission process as the deadline time gets closer. Today, it may take you 30 minutes to upload your application, but tomorrow it could take hours... Don't delay! Do it today!
