Florida Polytechnic Visits Jax on Jan. 11th!

Join Florida Polytechnic at the Avenues 20 Movie Theater on January 11th for an in-depth look at Florida's newest state university. We're rolling out the purple carpet in your hometown to show you what innovative opportunities are in store for Florida Poly students.

From campus culture to computer science, we're covering it all. You'll hear directly from university faculty from each discipline, as well as leaders from Florida's growing STEM industries. If you have any other questions, we'll answer them in a Q&A session following the film.

USF Scholarships & Fellowships - Deadline approaching!

Attention Future USF Students! 
Scholarship application deadline is January 31st! 

Use the Scholarship Tracking Application & Review System (STARS) to apply for USF scholarships for the 2014-2015 Award Year.

  • Scholarships may be based on academic merit, extracurricular activities (e.g. Boy Scouts, ROTC, Robotics, etc.), special talent (e.g. music, multilingual, etc.), demographics (e.g. Donor specific High School, Florida county resident, etc.).
  • STARS allows you to apply for USF scholarships by completing a brief questionnaire and then shows you a list of scholarship you may qualify for based on your responses.
  • Some scholarships consider financial need and require that you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which becomes available beginning January 2, 2014 for the 2014-2015 Award Year.
  • Additional scholarship opportunities may be added to STARS as funds become available after your initial application.
  • We encourage you to return to STARS periodically to review & update your questionnaire or simply review your eligible scholarship list to see if you qualify for any additional scholarships after your initial application. 
  • Note: Only USF students who have been admitted to USF and activated their USF email address should apply for scholarships via STARS. If you currently do not have a NetID and USF email address, you can find more information regarding activation and use at the USF NetID information page.

NAACP's ACT-SO Competition Applications Open!

The NAACP's Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. ACT-SO includes 26 categories of competition in the sciences, humanities, business, and performing and visual arts.

Here is the scoop:
  • This is a national competition, with 27 competition categories’ including the Sciences, Humanities, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and Business.
  • Each students can compete in UP TO THREE AREAS
  • Applications due January 10, 2014
  • There is a Student Orientation for those accepted on January 25, 2014
  • Past ACT-SO participants include actors Anthony Anderson and Jada Pinkett-Smith, film maker John Singleton, and recording artist Kanye West.   

Who is eligible? Students who are of African descent , US citizens, enrolled in grades 9-12, and amateurs in their categories’ of competition.

What are the benefits of participation?

9th Annual Teen Entrepreneurship Conference

Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from UNF.

The It’s HER Business Teen Entrepreneurship Conference is a one-day conference for girls ages 15-18 enrolled in high school.  This event brings parents, students, school administration, and women business owners together in one forum and has so far exposed over 800 young women to a whole new world of opportunities. The conference is designed to encourage financial literacy and help girls learn about starting businesses and managing personal finances through interactive games and hands-on activities.  We use successful local business women as conference facilitators/mentors to share their ideas and experiences with the participants.

Participant requirements:

  • Must be 15-18 years of age and enrolled in a Duval, Clay, or St. Johns County High School to attend.

Duke University Summer Programs



Duke University proudly offers two exciting academic programs for high school students during the summer of 2014!

Summer College for High School Students takes place June 28–July 25 and is designed to enhance your readiness for future admission to an undergraduate degree program at a selective and prestigious university or college.  Students currently in grades 10 & 11 will make friends from all over the globe as they learn from the highly-trained, highly-intriguing faculty of Duke University and earn college credit.

Duke Summer Academy for High School Students (July 5-25) is f
or students currently in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. This program is designed for personal enrichment and offers a two-part daytime course in Global Citizenship and Leadership and an evening course with many exciting options available. The classroom environment is intimate enough to gain the individual attention you need to thrive, and the residential life is full of exciting excursions and activities.
