PSAT at REL October 19, 2016

PSAT for REL Sophomores and Juniors
The PSAT will be given to all REL 10th and 11th grade students Wednesday, October 19th, during the school day. There is no fee for students to take this test. Students taking classes at REL are automatically assigned to a testing room for this test. Students who are taking classes at FSCJ who are interested in taking this test, should report to the REL Media Center at 7:15 a.m. October 19th for their test room location.

What is the PSAT?
The PSAT measures the knowledge and skills you've developed in reading, writing and language, and math. From the Princeton Review, "The PSAT (which stands for Preliminary SAT) won’t count towards your college admissions applications, but it is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. This means that some of the highest scoring students may win scholarship money, so while you shouldn’t stress out about the PSAT, you certainly shouldn’t ignore it either. Instead, use the PSAT as practice for the SAT and ACT and one of the starting points on your college admissions journey."

Why take the PSAT?
This is a great way for students to preview and practice for the SAT.  In addition, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation uses the PSAT as an initial screen for candidates for the National Merit Scholarship Program.  The College Board has also recently partnered with other scholarship providers so they can more easily use the PSAT data to reach eligible low income and minority students in high schools across the country. (Learn more about the National Merit Scholarship.)

Do I have to pay to take the PSAT?
No, DCPS will cover the cost for Robert E Lee students to take the test.

Should I share my e-mail address and opt in to the Student Search Service?
If you share your email address and opt in, it’s easier for colleges, scholarship programs, and the College Board to get in touch with you.  For more information about the student search service click here: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/about/benefits/student-search-service

Can I study for the PSAT?

Sure!  Click link for practice tests or to study with Khan Academy: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/practice

How do I get the results?
Be sure to provide a valid e-mail address when submitting answers on the student questionnaire before the start of the test.  The College Board will email students an access code to view their online score reports.  You'll have access to a robust online score report designed to help you understand your scores better. It will provide a detailed breakdown of your performance and give you a better idea of what you need to work on most. Your score report will also list AP courses you may be particularly well-prepared for.

For more information about the PSAT, view the College Board website: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/inside-the-test

LEDA Scholars Program Presentation

WHAT IS LEDA?
LEDA scholars participate in a dynamic leadership development program while receiving specialized College Guidance, Standardized Test Preparation and Writing Instruction. Throughout their senior year in high school, LEDA Scholars are guided One-On-One through college, scholarship and financial aid applications. Approximately, 80 percent of LEDA Scholars have enrolled in our nation’s most competitive colleges.  While in college, LEDA continues to offer holistic support to ensure that LEDA Scholars not only succeed, but thrive and lead on campus and beyond. The program includes a 7-week completely FREE 7 week summer institute held at Princeton University, FREE of cost to ALL students including travel!

QUALIFICATIONS:
We are looking for students who are typically in the top 10% of their class, have an unweighted GPA of at least 3.5 or above, are enrolled in the most rigorous courses available at their school, are involved outside of the classroom (whether it be part time work, caring for a family member, clubs & sports in school), and are socioeconomically disadvantaged (90% of our scholars have an annual family income of $66,000 or less). We understand that most schools do not have access to financial information, so you can filter by Free and Reduced Lunch students or have all that qualify come to the presentation.

Presentation Date: Sept. 23rd
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Length: 45 minutes
Note: This program is only open to Juniors, Sophmores, and Freshmen.
